I. GENERAL RULES

  1. Rules for Intramural Ultimate will be governed by the 11th edition USA Ultimate rules with the following modifications (rules 2-14). The link to the USA Ultimate rules can be found here: http://www.usaultimate.org/resources/officiating/rules/11th_edition_rules.aspx
  2. All games will be played at Long Field on the corner of Lincoln and Sheridan Street.
  3. Ultimate is a non-contact sport played by two 7-player teams. A game may begin if a team can only field 5 players. The other team is NOT obligated to play with less than 7, but may do so if they would like.
  4. Co-Rec Rule: Corec teams may comprise of a 4:3 ratio in regard to gender. If a team only has 6 players the ratio may be 3:3 or 4:2. If a team only has 5 players the ratio may be 3:2.
  5. Game time is penalty time. Teams must be on their assigned fields and ready to play at the scheduled game time. Please consult the Intramural Handbook for details on the penalty system.
  6. Each game consists of continuous play in a game to 13 points, win by two. Each goal is worth one point.
  7. A short “halftime” break will occur with the first team to score 7 goals in the contest. Due to time constraints, teams may agree to take a very short half or not to take a half at all.
  8. 45 minutes after the game is SCHEDULED to start, the supervisor will announce a “time cap.” Time cap rules go into effect at the end of a point if the cap is called during the middle of that point. If a team's lead is four points or greater, the game is over. (For example, if a cap goes into effect and the score is 11-2, GAME OVER.) Otherwise, one point is added to the highest team's score, and the game is played to that number, WIN BY ONE ONLY. Neither team is allowed to call timeouts during the cap. If a timeout is called during the cap, it is considered a turnover and the other team gains possession of the disc immediately.
  9. There will be two 30-second time outs awarded per team and can be taken at any time during the 45 minutes. To begin play after a time out, a check must be made by the defensive team.
  10. All participants MUST wear athletic shoes while playing. Screw-in and metal cleats are NOT permitted.
  11. Each player must wear a specific color or other clothing (such as a uniform) that distinguishes that player from the players on the other team.
  12. In the event of inclement weather, it is the captain’s responsibility to check the NUIM web site after 2pm on weekdays and after 10am on Sundays. It is the responsibility of the team captain to notify team members of the cancellation.
  13. To start and restart play, captains of the two teams each flip a disc simultaneously. The representative of one team will call “same” or “different” while the discs are in the air. The team winning the flip has the choice of:
    1. Receiving or throwing the initial throw-off; or B) Selecting which goal they wish to defend initially. The team losing the flip is given the remaining choice. The second half begins with an automatic reversal of the initial throw-off position.
